Restaurant Review – The Winding Stair, Ormond Quay, Dublin

Meal time:
Dinner in the evening
Choice:
There were a good few dishes which seemed like good choices and what was coming from the kitchen looked like they matched the description.
What I had (as described on the menu):
Cauliflower and Macroom Feta fritters, roasted beet salad & velvet cloud yogurt
Ease of figuring carbs: 3
(1 – 10, 1 being easy and 10 being hard to know how many carbs are in the dish)
- I wasn’t sure whether there was flour in the fritters, but didn’t think so.
- I estimated the carbs for the beetroot, yogurt and fritters at 18g.
Food rating (taste and presentation): 10/10
I also had desert. I don’t normally have deserts (which are allowed, but must be counted for insulin in my case) but was tempted by the lovely creations I saw coming from the kitchen. For diabetics and people who want to reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes, deserts shouldn’t be an everyday thing but ok as an occasional treat.
What I had (as described on the menu):
Chocolate tart with honeycomb, raspberry drizzle and white chocolate ice cream
Ease of figuring carbs: 8
(1 – 10, 1 being easy and 10 being hard to know how many carbs are in the dish)
- This type of desert is quite difficult to carb because it could be made from different ingredients and methods.
- I estimated the cake part to be 50g of carb, the ice cream to be 20g carbs (generally ice cream has about 10g carb per scoop, but this was a large portion and luxury ice creams are usually higher in carbs).
- I estimated the carbs for the jam on the plate to be 20g (jam generally has 20g per heaped teaspoon of jam).
- I estimated the honeycomb to have 15g of carb. You could check how many carbs are in something similar, like a Crunchy bar which has 27g of carbs per bar. This is a smaller portion. Even though this honeycomb is restaurant made it would be similar. As you can see, sometimes you just have to guess.
- Knowledge is power, so check out similar recipes and their carb counts and the next time you come across something similar you will be more confident determining the carb count.
Food rating (taste and presentation): 10/10
This desert was fabulous and worth the carbs!
