Junk Kouture Competition

The southern winner of this year’s, Junk Kouture competition, was a group from the Presentation De La Salle College, Bagenalstown, Carlow, who made a great dress from what would be a year’s supply of waste material generated from a type 1 diabetics medication. The designers were students, Ellen McDonald, Ciara Carew, Paul Roche.
Junk Kouture was set up 6 years ago to encourage young designers from secondary schools to look at junk in a different way and create imaginative wearable art from everyday junk.
The designers used test strips, various plastic inserts and pump tubes and the head piece was made from plastic tubes and insulin pens. Look at the shoes!!
The dress was inspired by designer Ciara, who’s brother has type 1 diabetes. The great dress is called ‘you’re not my type’. The guys wanted to educate people on type 1 diabetes and went to schools to show the students and teachers the dress and educate them on type 1 diabetes.
